Drunken woman climbs out the area river

.
A 20-year-old drunken La Crosse woman was taken to a local hospital Thursday afternoon for detoxification after climbing out of the La Crosse River.

La Crosse police found Kathryn Schmidt, of 809 S. Seventh St., soaking wet under the Copeland Avenue bridge about 12:30 p.m. sitting within a few feet of the water, according to a report released Friday. They also found her with a water bottle filled with pure vodka.

Schmidt registered a 0.31 percent blood-alcohol content level, according to reports. She also had a cut on her forehead from hitting her head on rocks.

Schmidt initially told police she went into the water to talk to a fisherman, then said she was collecting a job application at Quizno’s subs and “decided to go for a swim,” reports stated. Schmidt said she was drinking on the river bank to make her feel at ease as she was picking up job applications, reports stated.

She was taken to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center for detoxification and issued an underage drinking ticket.

" By chance are you a wannabe paranoid conspiracy serial killer wisher. When I first heard this on news, I knew someone would put nutty comments like yours on blogs lol. Now just watch out for the killers/aliens coming for you, maybe they gave her the water bottle of vodka, or maybe alcoholics hide there drinking and do dumb things when drunk. I didn't know there were so many serial killers over this world, causing all the drinking problems. "

" LaCrosse needs to build a 20 foot wall around the entire city to keep the serial killer (or killers) out....then someone should fill it with water! "

" This young lady had a .31 blood alcohol content in the middle of the day. Clearly she has a problem because nobody just casually drinks that much in the middle of the day. She clearly needs help, but as Susan pointed out that is more easily said than done. For alcohol abuse to consume her life would not only be a personal tragedy for her, but for our community as well because it will impact many more people than her with potential terrible consequences. We do not need another drowning, but neither do we need people killed in a drunk driving accident. "

" Alot of the comments placed are incorrect. i am not depressed, suicidal, or anything like that. i was obviously drunk, but ne 1 who has ever been drunk knows that u do stupid things. i wasnt putting myself in real danger(well sort of). but i do value life and never intentionally would hurt myself. oh.... and yes i did go 2 get applications. im normally a shy person so alcohol always helped me out 2 b more social. i obviously need a different way 2 b more comfortable with myself..........oh and by the way it wasnt vodka, it was a cheap rum! " You would think it would be against the law for Quiznos to sell vodka water without a liquor license. The police department should check into this. "

" Underage drinking is an issue all over the US.
as is alcol is an addective drug, yep she needs help. What about the others who have not been picked up by the LaX PD? what about the one that is sitting in there bedroom plastered? Yep LPD is on the proper tract cracking down on those selling to minors, we as adults also have a task to assist them. Fishermen? Hmmm story changed, betting it was just that a story. again YEP she needs help "

" Where did she get the water bottle? Did she fill it with vodka or did the serial killers? If there are serial killers out there, it is certainly possible that they are deliberately misleading victims into drinking too much alcohol. That would explain how someone with over .3 could manage to get to the river instead of passing out. They start out happy and intoxicated but someone slips them something and they become vulnerable and near comotose. "

" Poor girl...

I agree that she needs some sort of help. There are too many red flags that go along with this picture. "

" I think this is going to be another excuse Lax will use to put up a huge ugly barrier. I don't live there anymore and don't think anyone on whatever board appreciates what you have in the city- such a beautiful scape so I think it'll be a really big shame to see the county feel like they need to babysit people who are growing up without parents to beat some sense into them. " EW - A water bottle of pure vodka and a .31% BAC at noon....20 years old....what makes you think she was not talking to egrets she thought were fishermen.... Come on...let her take responsibility. Not only should she have an underage ticket, who sold her the vodka in the first place (bet there is a reciept and empty bottle in the car) and why does she not get a ticket for public nuisance? Fair is fair. Shouldn't just be the Sat. Night teens and bars interupting police evenings that get the "red carpet treatment". "

" The general population seems to be under the impression that any one person, at any given time can receive "help" for all the disorders that would fall under the category of mental health.
If the person is over the age of 18 getting the necessary help is almost impossible if the individual isn't "on board." Secondly, the costs affiliated with mental health care are astronomical-even for those with medical insurance and a decent income. There is the issue of even getting appointments. I could go on but won't. The mental health care community is even more broken than mainstream health care. Sad to say I don't see medical care ever getting better. It's only going to get worse as the population ages.

" are you dumb? she had a .31 BAC and youre believing everything she is saying? she obviously wasnt looking for job applications and wasnt talking to fisherman. later today/tomorrow she wont have a clue about any of this. and there will be people saying that the 'serial killer' had something to do with this. someone run down there an draw a smiley face. "

Elowyn Rose wrote on May 9, 2008 11:18 AM:

" I think that people should have been there for her instead of clearly not doing anything about it. I mean what were the fisherman thinking? I'm sure they noticed it.

I say they should have done something. "

2nd it's in the middle of the day, 3rd while she is looking for a job? and talking to fisherman. Does anyone else see anything wrong woth this picture. Get this girl HELP...

If she wasn't trying to kill herself, She must be depressed or something. This is not typical behavior for 20 yrs old. Help he before she ends up at floating in the river face down. "
